Greensboro: Partners in Childcare

Partners in Childcare

608 Battleground Avenue

Website: http://partnersinchildcare.com/

Located on the north edge of downtown, between NewBridge Stadium and Fisher Park--across the street from Green Hill Cemetery.

Partners is convenient for several important reasons:

• the hours are 7-6, which works out well if you have an 8am class.

• they take infants as young as six weeks.

• this summer, they've allowed a faculty member to bring her 8-month-old on a drop-in basis, for which she paid by the day rather than for the full week.

• because many Partners parents are teachers (K-12 or university faculty), they'll let you go part-time or no-time during the summer and still have a full-time spot reserved for August. Many centers require you to pay throughout the summer to hold onto your spot during the academic year. Of course, if they fill up, they might change this policy.

The center is clean and well-staffed, with very little turnover.  One faculty member's almost-seven-year-old daughter went there for pre-K and was extremely well prepared, socially and academically, for Kindergarten. Now, her 8-month-old daughter is in the nursery, and most of the same teachers are there from three years ago. Even the substitute teachers are the same.

The owner and directors are on a first-name basis with every parent and they visit the classrooms frequently and, thus, have a good relationship with each child.

They serve a hot lunch and morning and afternoon snacks. If you have special dietary restrictions, they're happy to work with you.

The tuition is reasonable for this area. It's not the cheapest, but it's also not the most expensive.

Greensboro: First Baptist Church Preschool

When I began this blog to seek out part-time daycare options, I didn't realize I had an option one block away from my house.  The First Baptist Church Preschool on Mendenhall and Guilford is wonderful and inexpensive.  Their hours are limited (9 - 1 weekdays), cost for five days is $245 (more for the two year old room).  They take infants from 6 weeks old - children five years.  In the infant room there is a low baby to teacher ratio (six babies maximum).  They might be full for Fall 09 at this point, but babies/toddlers move all the time as they have birthdays.  While their curriculum (particularly for older children) is taught from a Christian perspective, they do not teach doctrine.

Burlington, Alamance County: Alamance mommies

A lot of resources like daycare can be found through the local mommy group: alamancemommies.com. It is an excellent source of information (good pediatricians, dentists, you name it).  Some of the mommies on there keep kids part-time.
